Gloria in Excelsis Deo – translated as ‘Glory to God in the Highest’ and known as the Greater Doxology and Angelic hymn – is a traditional Christian hymn dated to around the 2nd and 3rd century. Considered a hymn composed to emulate the psalms, the Gloria in Excelsis is sung in Eastern and Western traditions and present within every liturgical rite.
The hymn is presented here in modern iterations of Irish and Scots Gaelic. It is encouraged to sing in one’s ancestral language, connecting oneself to not only those native and in diaspora, but to all Gaelic Christians in the past, present, and future. Tá Críosd ar éirigh! – Go deimhin, tá e ar éirigh! Tha Crìosd air èiridh! – Gu dearbh, tha e air èiridh! Christ is Risen! – Indeed, He is Risen!
Glóir do Dhia (Irish Translation)
Glóir do Dhia in ard na bFlaitheas
Agus síocháin ar talamh, deamhéin chun na ndaoine,
Molaimid thú, beannaímid thú,
Adhraimid thú, móraimid thú,
Tugaimid buíochas duit as ucht do mhórghlóire,
A THIARNA Dia, a Rí neamhaí,
A Dhia an tAthair Uilechumhachtach.
A THIARNA, an tAonghin Mic Íosa Críost;
A THIARNA Dia, a Uain Dé, a Mhic an Athar,
a bheir leat peacaí an domhain,
déan trócaire orainn.
Tusa a bheir leat peacaí an domhain,
déan trócaire orainn.
Tusa a bheir leat peacaí an domhain,
glac lenár nguí.
Tusa atá i suíomh ar dheas Dé an tAthair:
déan trócaire orainn.
Óir is tusa a mháin atá naofa;
is tusa amháin an TIARNA;
is tusa amáin is aird e, a Chríost
mar aon leis an Spiorad Naomh,
i nglóir dé an tAthair. Áiméan.

Glory Be to God (English Translation)
Glory be to God on high
And in earth peace, goodwill towards men,
We praise thee, we bless thee,
we worship thee, we glorify thee,
we give thanks to thee, for thy great glory
O LORD God, heavenly King,
God the Father Almighty.
O LORD, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ;
O LORD God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy;
thou only art the LORD;
thou only, O Christ,
with the Holy Ghost,
art most high
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
